Serving up success: AgQuip Committee honoured with Neil Donaldson Memorial Award

18 Aug 2026

The Droughtmaster AgQuip Committee has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the breed, receiving the Neil Donaldson Memorial Award for its years of dedicated service, breed promotion and commitment to Droughtmaster Australia.

Led by long-time volunteers Lynn and Mark Heyman, the committee has transformed Droughtmaster Australia’s presence at the annual AgQuip Field Days in Gunnedah into much more than a promotional site. Since taking the reins in 2016, the group has built a strong reputation for its famous Droughtmaster steak sandwiches, friendly hospitality and passionate advocacy for the breed.

Behind the BBQ is a hardworking team whose commitment has helped strengthen Droughtmaster Australia’s profile at one of the country’s largest agricultural field days.

Each year, the committee coordinates the Droughtmaster site, from organising volunteers and cattle displays to sourcing supplies, preparing food and welcoming thousands of AgQuip visitors. Their efforts provide an important opportunity to showcase both Droughtmaster cattle and the eating quality of Droughtmaster beef, while creating a welcoming meeting point for members, breeders and those interested in learning more about the breed.

One of the committee’s most visible achievements is its purpose-built Droughtmaster BBQ promotional trailer, completed in late 2024. Conceived by Mark Heyman and co-funded through AgQuip proceeds, the trailer combines a commercial cooking space with merchandise and breed promotional displays, creating a mobile platform to represent Droughtmaster Australia at events.

The committee has also played an important role in encouraging the next generation of Droughtmaster breeders. Its support of Bowraville Central School’s agricultural program helped establish Bawrrung Droughtmaster Stud, giving students the opportunity to work with Droughtmaster cattle, develop their skills and promote the breed through local shows.

The Neil Donaldson Memorial Award recognises those who have made an exceptional contribution to Droughtmaster Australia and the advancement of the breed. Adding to the significance of the presentation, members of Neil Donaldson’s family were there to see the AgQuip Committee receive the honour, including Neil’s sister Susanne Stirton, accompanied by James Stirton, and Neil’s daughter Georgia Donaldson.

Their presence made the occasion particularly special, connecting the committee’s contribution to the enduring legacy of Neil Donaldson and his service to Droughtmaster Australia.

For the AgQuip Committee, the award is fitting recognition of the countless volunteer hours, teamwork and genuine passion they have invested in promoting Droughtmasters.

What began with a desire to put Droughtmaster steak sandwiches back on the menu has grown into an enduring example of what dedicated members can achieve for the breed.
